Patrick Dos Santos: The Problem Solver

"I have never worked in order to be in the spotlight. What I enjoy most about my job is building something that works well and that everybody is happy with." Patrick Dos Santos is extremely modest. As a global support engineer, a role where he helps the other engineers, who are directly in contact with the customers, to fix any problems that can appear after Scality’s software has been installed, Patrick is one of the most respected and knowledgeable team members. But he doesn't care about the recognition, it's the work itself that matters the most.

Learning to Code Changed Their Life

Imagine graduating with a bachelor’s degree in biology or wanting to start psychology and religious studies at university and ending up as a software engineer in the heart of the Silicon Valley? Seems hard to believe, yet that’s what the Holberton school has helped achieve for five Scality engineers: Electra, Dora, Jay, Bennett and Philip. Let me explain.

Dusseldorf SDS Day The SDS Day tour continues.  Dusseldorf was the site for Scality’s first Software-Defined Storage Day in Germany on Thursday the 21st of September.  A crowd of nearly 50 people joined the event held at the BeOne conference center near the Rhine.  As attendees gathered before the start of the program, they had an opportunity to mingle and speak with representatives from Scality and our partners HPE, Cisco, Ctera, Veeam and Owncloud. To kick things off, Peter Kocur, Scality’s country manager for DACH, welcomed attendees and introduced Erwan Menard, president and COO of Scality to start the program. .

Scality’s SDS Day London 2017

If attendance at Scality’s first Software-Defined Storage Day in London on September 20th is any indication, it’s pretty clear that people are looking for solutions to the ever-growing data storage issue. The meeting room at the Shangri-La Hotel at the iconic Shard was so full that they had to bring in extra chairs during the break. Over coffee, before the speaking kicked-off, more than 100 attendees enjoyed the great view from the 35th floor at the Shard, and an opportunity to visit and speak with Scality partners HPE, Ctera, ASG Atempo, Veeam and Storage Made Easy.

Using Cloud Storage for Backup

The cloud is already known for high scalability and availability. So why settle for a generic cloud solution when you can get something much more flexible and economical at the same time? Discover how you can get all the benefits of cloud storage for backup without actually subscribing to a public cloud. You can do so by implementing a cloud storage solution on premises that’s using the same approach the cloud vendor uses to manage its own storage resources.

Big World, Small Screen

How mobile streaming is taking over the planet Infographic: Mobile Streaming By the Numbers Mobile streaming has hit the big time. Even as you read this, millions of people all over the world are viewing videos on mobile devices. And perhaps surprisingly, much of this is on smartphones. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. After all, you don’t see that many laptops or tablets out and in use on the street, bus, or train. But people are perennially glued to their phones. After the zillionth hearing of your iPhone music library, a near first-run movie on Netflix.

Alexandre Merle: A Self-made Man

Passionate about computer science since he was really young and self taught, Alexandre decided to take evening classes and then he managed to get into the 42 school, a famous computer programming school in Paris. After that, at only 23, he was recruited by Scality, where he has been for more than a year now.

We are moving to a digital world where most business value will be created in a digital form. Therefore, businesses need to store more and more data, in the form of IoT, user-generated data, videos, documents, backups, archives of everything... Storing all this in all-flash, even with dedupe – and much of the unstructured data cannot be compressed further or deduped – is prohibitively expensive. At Scality, we see a world with two types of storage leveraging a multi-cloud (not hybrid cloud) approach.

The Perfect Pivot

If you’ve worked in venture capital funded companies, invested in them, or simply surfed the news of the VC space on the Internet, you’ve likely come across the “pivot.” It’s a wonderful euphemism for “we had no idea what we were doing, so we’re completely reworking our strategy.”  Maybe you’ve heard of the famous company Odeo, or maybe not… but you’ve certainly heard of Twitter, the name change that accompanied their legendary pivot.
Until recently, the corporate world considered feedback to be a formal exercise, part of an employee’s yearly performance appraisal. And such process would then make performance management and financial compensation inextricably tied. Scality was no exception. We had an individual bonus system in place tied to quarterly objectives, based on the idea that we could establish a direct correlation between an individual’s impact on the business and what he/she earns. That’s how we managed performance and compensation back in 2013 when there were only 40 of us. We were following a Management by Objective (MBO) approach, a traditional method, which.

Somebody is Watching

Storage requirements for video surveillance data are huge and growing, fueled by continuing growth in the number of IP-based surveillance cameras, network video recorders (NVRs), dash cams, shoulder mounted police cameras and more. And, according to Gartner, 40% of the cost of video surveillance is in storage of the footage that’s captured—and by 2019, they predict that those storage requirements will increase by 50%.

You’ve probably heard it before : “File is out, object is in.” Well, here at Scality, we have a more nuanced point of view: we believe file and object fit different use cases, and we surely recognize that for the small enterprise or the individual, a filesystem is much easier to use. It’s partly habit and education, but the fact remains that dumping everything into a bucket instead neatly organizing folders and subfolders can be challenging. Yet the main actor in providing storage services, Amazon S3, uses buckets and objects. Since Scality offers both file and object, we understand why.
Scality’s leaders have created Le Club to recognize and reward team members selected each year for their exceptional contribution to the company.  Together with this acknowledgment, Le Club members are also offered the opportunity of taking a trip together, to rest and enjoy the Scality spirit outside the workplace. For the year 2017, 20 employees have been chosen. Scality will publish a profile of a different team member every other week. Meet Alexis Wedrychowski “I hate routine, I need action all the time, meeting new people, living new experiences and starting new projects.” Alexis Wedrychowski is contagiously enthusiastic he is always up.

This week we launch the latest version of our software-defined storage solution, Scality RING7. Scality RING today supports well over one hundred mission-critical customer deployments at petabyte scale—many of them up to several dozen petabytes and growing. Our customers depend on Scality RING for storing their data reliably with continuous availability for 24×7 access from tens of millions of aggregate users. Moreover, with the introduction of our native RING Scale-out File System (SOFS) back in 2013, we can now power use cases requiring access from both modern object-style interfaces such as AWS S3 API and legacy applications that depend on.

When we launched Scality S3 Server one year ago (here’s the Scality press release), we did so with big dreams. After all, the project came to life following a Scality-sponsored hackathon. We knew we were making something amazing, putting it out in the open, and helping developers by offering them a free tool they could use to test their apps in an AWS S3 environment. The response has been overwhelming. Available on GitHub and Docker Hub as a container, the project has taken off like a rocket. We find ourselves marking 300,000 pulls on Docker Hub. (The number continues to.

Backup Storage: Disk vs. Tape

Disk or Tape? Guess Which Technology Has a Future. Rumors of tape’s demise have been circulating for almost 3 decades, and yet the medium is still with us. But perhaps not for much longer: Now that the cloud is muscling into the backup and archiving role, it looks like tape-based storage may be nearing its final days. As far back as 2010, The Register reported a 25% decline in tape drive and media sales. Fast- forwarding (to use some tape-derived slang) to February 2017, the same publication speculated aloud about the latest nail in tape’s coffin, in an article titled.
